You can drill into Earthaus Tadelakt to install shower doors, hardware, or fixtures — similar to drilling into tile or other hard, finished materials. However, proper technique and timing are essential to prevent cracking and maintain waterproof integrity.
When to Drill
Wait until the Tadelakt is fully cured and sealed before drilling. This means:
All Tadelakt coats are complete and burnished.
Olive Oil Soap Sealer has been applied and cured.
Beeswax Protective Sealer has been applied and cured.
Why it matters: Drilling before full cure can cause cracking around the hole or damage the sealed surface layer.
How to Drill Into Tadelakt
Use a carbide-tipped masonry bit appropriate for the size of the anchor or fixture.
Drill at low speed with steady, even pressure — do not use hammer-drill mode initially through the plaster.
Once through the Tadelakt layer, switch to hammer mode if needed to penetrate the substrate behind.
Vacuum or blow out dust from the hole before installing the anchor.
Sealing After Drilling
After the fixture is installed:
Apply a bead of clear, mold-resistant silicone caulk around the perimeter of the fixture plate or escutcheon.
This prevents water from entering the drilled hole and reaching the substrate.
Allow the caulk to cure fully before water exposure.
