A Tadelakt wall can be refinished when the surface needs restoration or aesthetic adjustment. The process involves removing the existing sealed layer to expose the underlying plaster, followed by reapplication of all four coats of the Tadelakt finish plaster.
Step 1: Sand Down the Sealed Layer
Tadelakt surfaces are sealed with Olive Oil Soap and Beeswax Sealer, which creates a hydrophobic and polished layer. Before refinishing, this layer must be removed to restore absorbency and allow proper bonding of new material.
Use 80–100 grit sandpaper or an electric sander to remove the burnished soap layer.
Sand evenly across the surface, taking care not to damage or gouge the plaster.
Continue until the finish appears matte and slightly rough.
Wipe thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove all dust and residue before reapplication.
Why it matters: Sanding off the sealed layer makes the surface absorbent again and slightly textured, helping the new coats of Tadelakt bond securely.
Step 2: Reapply the Tadelakt System
Once the surface is properly prepared, reapply all four Tadelakt finish coats, including burnishing and sealing.

Carefully burnish to restore the signature smooth, polished appearance.
Why it matters: Refinishing with all four coats ensures proper water resistance, sheen, and longevity of the new surface.

Ensure the surface is fully stable before refinishing — no loose or delaminated areas should remain.
For repairs larger than nicks and dings, do not attempt partial spot repairs within the polished field; refinish full panels for uniformity.
Re-sealing must always occur on a fully cured and burnished Tadelakt surface.
