You do need to caulk where Tadelakt meets the shower floor. Earthaus recommends applying a bead of clear silicone caulk wherever Tadelakt meets another surface or material in wet areas — especially where the Tadelakt wall meets the shower floor. This step is essential to prevent water intrusion and ensure the long-term integrity of the installation.
Why Caulking is Required
Where two different materials meet (such as Tadelakt plaster and a tile or stone shower floor), there is always the potential for differential movement. As the building settles or materials expand and contract with temperature changes, gaps can open at these joints.
Why it matters:
Caulk provides a flexible, waterproof seal that accommodates movement without cracking.
Without caulk, water can penetrate the joint and reach the substrate, causing long-term moisture damage.
Silicone caulk is preferred because it remains flexible and waterproof over time.
Application Guidelines
When to caulk:
After the Tadelakt finish is fully cured and sealed (Olive Oil Soap and Beeswax Sealer applied and cured).
Before the shower is put into use.
How to apply:
Clean and dry the joint area thoroughly.
Apply a consistent bead of clear, mold-resistant silicone caulk along the joint.
Smooth with a dampened finger or caulking tool.
Allow to cure per the manufacturer's specifications (typically 24–48 hours) before water exposure.
