How long do Earthaus plasters last once mixed?

Mixed Earthaus plaster stays workable for up to two weeks when stored sealed at room temperature (50–70°F).

Once mixed with water, Earthaus plasters can typically be stored for up to two weeks at room temperature, provided they are kept sealed and protected from environmental extremes. This long working window comes from how the material cures.

Why Mixed Plaster Lasts So Long

When mixed with water, Earthaus plasters undergo a slow pozzolanic reaction between lime and fine pumice aggregate. Unlike Portland cement, which sets rapidly through hydration, Earthaus lime plasters cure through this gradual lime–pozzolan reaction — giving the plaster long open time and excellent workability compared to cement-based mixes.

How Temperature Affects Pot Life

  • Heat accelerates the chemical reaction, shortening pot life.

  • Cold temperatures slow the reaction, but risk damage if freezing occurs.

  • Freezing or excessive heat can permanently compromise material integrity.

How to Store Mixed Plaster

  1. Transfer the mixed plaster to a sealed container.

  2. Keep it away from direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations.

  3. Maintain a storage temperature between 50–70°F (10–21°C).

  4. Prevent exposure to freezing or prolonged heat above 90°F (32°C).

  5. Before reuse, remix lightly to restore consistency if settling has occurred.

Proper storage conditions slow the pozzolanic reaction and keep the mix workable longer, ensuring consistent texture and adhesion.

When to Discard Mixed Plaster

  • Do not retemper (add excess water) after the initial mixing phase.

  • Discard material that has stiffened and is difficult to remix.
