You can apply Earthaus plasters in areas exposed to high heat. Earthaus lime plasters perform well in high-heat environments, provided the substrate is stable and the surface is not exposed to direct flame. Minor surface cracking can occur due to temperature fluctuations, but this generally does not affect performance.
How Lime Plaster Behaves in Heat
Lime plaster is naturally resistant to heat and performs reliably in areas such as fireplace surrounds, masonry heaters, and walls near stoves. It can withstand high surface temperatures without softening, discoloring, or releasing fumes.
Because lime plaster is fully mineral-based and contains no polymers or synthetic additives, it remains dimensionally stable under heat. However, large or repeated temperature swings can cause the substrate beneath the plaster to expand and contract, leading to fine, visible surface cracks.
What to expect:
Hairline cracks from thermal movement are common in high-heat areas.
These cracks are aesthetic only — they do not compromise adhesion, breathability, or durability.
The Substrate Matters Most
Performance depends on the material beneath the plaster. Heat-exposed surfaces must be:
Non-combustible
Dimensionally stable
Properly cured before plastering
The movement of metal, wood, or other thermally reactive substrates can telegraph through the plaster as hairline cracking. The plaster itself remains intact — the visible change reflects substrate expansion and contraction rather than failure of the plaster.
Important Limits
Avoid applying plaster directly on metal or combustible materials.
Fine thermal-movement cracking is considered normal in lime-based finishes.
Earthaus plasters should not be used as a fireproofing or flame-contact material.
